The Children’s ADVENTURE Playground at Wompatuck State Park

Despite being one of the most frequently visited family destinations on the south shore, Wompatuck does not have a playground. The Friends of Wompatuck has identified this as an important feature and has started a program to work with the DCR and other partners to ensure that one gets built.

Please support FOW efforts to build a state-of-the-art children’s playground next to the Wompatuck visitor's center. It will be fully ADA compatible. To be built as a "2-phase 2-year" project with the main playground constructed first, followed the next year with an "adventure" course set under dappled sunlight and trees. Our goal is to build a woodland themed playground where all children can have fun, laugh and play.

Project details

A study of playground options and a possible design was commissioned by DCR and the FOW in 2018. The study was done by Ann Tai, Masters in Landscape Design, Harvard University. Most of the following pictures and information is based on the findings of this study.

The area selected for the playground is shown in red below ("Phase One"). This area is currently used as a small extension to the visitor center parking lot, and is adjacent to the main parking lot and the pump track.

Vehicle access between the main parking lot and Union st is maintained through the main access road by the Visitor Center building.

The green area ("Phase two") has been reserved for a possible future extension of the playground.

This top-down view shows what the playground may look like, based on the report.

The playground design is an Americans with Disabilities (ADA) project modified specifically to be accessible for children of ALL abilities.

Parking Options and Access

This chart shows the options for modifying the parking lot to allow for accessible parking and compensate for lost parking space due to the playground itself.
